International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP)
In November 2012, St Brigid's College became authorised to teach the Primary Years Programme (PYP) from Pre-kindergarten to Year 5. As a school in Western Australia, St Brigid's College is also committed to the Curriculum Framework and the Australian Curriculum. As the PYP and the state curriculum are frameworks, they define how we teach at the College, while the Australian Curriculum outlines what we teach.
The PYP provides students with skills and opportunities to build meaning and refine their understandings through structured inquiry, whilst maintaining the focus on the child. A balanced curriculum is provided through the Five Essential Elements: Knowledge, Concepts, Skills, Attitudes and Action. The curriculum nurtures the development of the whole person in a Christ-centred environment, firmly based on the Catholic tradition. Through the PYP, the children are encouraged to develop independent inquiry, thought and responsibility for their own learning. This learning can be summarised in the Programme of Inquiry. This is a global view of the learning that occurs through the six trans-disciplinary themes at St Brigid's College.
Another key component of all IB programmes is the Learner Profile. It is central to the development of the student and it works in conjunction with St Brigid’s College values. The IB Learner Profile is at the heart of all IB programmes and is the IB Mission Statement in Action.
